Morning Brain Wake-up Call

Do you wake up and go through your morning on automatic pilot? How long does your brain remain in the “stand-by” mode like your pc does when you have turned away from it for an extended period? Perhaps there are days when you suddenly realize that the morning is half over and you have no memory of what has happened up to that point. You may even find yourself wondering, “How did I get to work today?”  If this sounds like your typical morning, here is a morning brain wake up exercise that will go beyond waking the brain up. This technique can actually stimulate stronger neural pathways and help create better memory.

One of the principles of creating a more powerful memory (See Memory Aerobics) is doing things out of routine. Another principle is taking information into the brain in a multi-sensory manner. This activity is a powerful stimulator for your brain.

Wear earplugs when you wake up especially if joining other family members for breakfast. Experience the morning without sound.

Has your spouse ever complained that you are only “half-listening?” If you’re in the middle of a morning routine, it is probably true. By virtue of ingrained routines, your brain has a pretty good idea of what to expect each morning. You are probably programmed to follow only a few words or sentences in order to get by. You tune out most other sensory inputs as well.  By blocking a major sensory route by wearing earplugs, your brain needs to use other cues to accomplish even simple tasks like hearing the microwave beep, or passing the sugar.

By depriving yourself of the sense of hearing, the brain ramps up the use of the other senses – visual, kinesthetic, olfactory, etc. Using these other senses to compensate for the lack of sound stimulates more brain activity and creates new neural pathways to accomplish the same tasks. More neural pathways lead to stronger recall. The more the other senses are brought into the mix, the better the brain’s response.

Try this for a week. Notice what happens when you take the earplugs out. What happens to your sense of hearing after depriving it for a while? Also, please inform your family members or others who may be around while you’re doing this, so that it doesn’t lead to other problems. After all, I’m a learning specialist, not a family counselor!
