Whether you are a manager, team leader, or any other title bearer as group leader, working with groups is a risky and difficult adventure. But organizations must bring people around a table to problem-solve, make decisions, and create new ways of doing things. The reason for doing these activities in groups is to create synergy – when 2 brains are better than one. However, in polling participants when asking, “how well does your group function at these meetings?” I usually get shoulder shrugs. Here’s a simple, powerful way to evaluate your group’s process.
Learning to Learn: A "How-to" Guide
If someone asked you, “How do you learn?” Would you be able to tell them? Do you have a defined process that let’s you drive your learning? Research has shown, adults that stay mentally active and continue their own learning path will continue to grow their brain’s capacity, all the way up to the point of death. In other words, continuous learning is a critical key of brain longevity. Brain longevity is a critical piece in long term health since the brain is part of the control panel that regulates our health. Although the debacles of Enron, Worldcom, and others have faded into the past, the simple practice of telling the truth continues to be an elusive ideal when listening to people at various levels of the organization. It is not the purpose of this article to talk about why this failure of a basic kindergarten teaching does not exist to the extent it should in the world of business. However, I will argue the business case of this much touted, but seldom practiced ideal and behavior.
