6 Steps to Accelerate Your Way To Success

Have you noticed the pace of change accelerating around you?  During that change, did you find yourself stressing to try to keep up? Have you been witness to the nature of how work is changing? Are the lines between work and personal life become blurred for you? Have the jobs around you in your organization been disappearing? If any of these things have been happening around you, you need to continue reading and discover the map to your own survival.

Brian Tracy, author of Maximum Achievement, says, “Today’s greatest source of wealth is between your ears.”  In other words, your single most precious source of your own wealth is your brain power. However, amazingly, most stressed out business professionals rarely consider their own brain power. Validate this for yourself. Ask ten colleagues you know if they consider themselves creative and brilliant. Chances are few will say yes to that question. Eighty-two percent of children entering the school system think of themselves as creative learners. Amazingly, by the time they finish high school that figure drops to 18%. What happens? Do people become “dumber” with more education? Again, consider your own self as a case in point.  How easily do you engage all areas of your brain when trying to learn something? If you experience frustration, what do you tell yourself? Do you know how to construct a learning session for yourself to fully engage all areas of the brain and thus learn more efficiently and productively?

There has been much call for the corporate world to become “learning organizations,” where the rate of adaptation of the workforce is on a never ending path. Unfortunately very few organizations have done this well. The ones that do tend to dominate in their industries. But what do the successful learning organizations do that others fail to accomplish? For one, they are dedicated to their employees’ lifelong learning and personal growth.

Ok, so you say your organization is not one of these success stories. So what? An organization is a collection of individuals. You are one of those. How dedicated are you to your lifelong learning and growth? If you’re reading this, you probably are dedicated to your own self-improvement and growth. But have you learned to powerfully unlock your brain’s full capacity as a lifelong habit? In an ever increasing complicated world, we all need to boost our brain’s power. There is a map that you can follow:

  1. Motivating your mind – ouch! When you are trying to learn, how motivated and excited are you? Included in this step is activating all four quadrants of the brain. Certain kinds of music can help stimulate the brain into an active and awake state. Most importantly, without this motivation, you are not ready to learn.
  2. Acquiring the information – do you know what your preferred mode of taking in information is? If you set up your acquisition accordingly, your comprehension will be better and more efficient.  The Mindex Thinking Style Instrument can help you better understand your preferred modes.
  3. Searching out meaning – this means making the information important to you personally. It implies integrating the information to a much deeper level within ourselves. In my work as a live trainer, rarely do I see this happen by itself in the learners. We have become a passive vessel for information, often to our own detriment. Most people do not think critically about the information they are being blasted with. Thinking deeper requires energy. Our though energy is a precious resource.
  4. Triggering the memory – implies that you actively bring the information back in a productive manner. Again, too often adults have become very passive in their learning. Unless there is a stress activator associated with the learning, such as a certification exam, or need to implement a new process, mental rehearsal is often perceived as “another thing to do.” Then when the learner has trouble recalling the information 2 weeks later, s/he berates him/herself for forgetting. Our Memory Aerobics program covers everything you  need to know about creating memory.
  5. Exhibiting what you know – this means a mental dress rehearsal is a must if you want be sure of your learning. Additionally, look for new opportunities to apply what you are learning as soon as you can.
  6. Reflecting on how you’ve learned – this final step assures that you are mastering your own learning process. Unfortunately, our cultural ways do not reinforce this behavior. Reflection is perceived to require going off to a cave somewhere and spend endless hours. The truth is that this step may only require a few brief moments, perhaps only seconds, but it is essential to your mastery.  Ask yourself: how is learning this task going? How could it have gone better? What’s the significance of this for me? These questions will help you really know how you, as an individual brain, learns. It will create a path to your own personal mastery of learning anything.
